Hydrosol Workshop: Alchemy and Herbs
Making Medicine: Hydrosols and Herbs.
One day hydrosol workshop July 15th, 10 AM to 4 PM
To use a Copper Alembic Still to make hydrosols is to experience alchemy as it has been practiced for over 2000 years. The Still itself is beautiful hammered copper and looks something like a mosque. Herbs with volatile oils (those that disperse as a gas when heated) are best. The Still captures those oils and disperses them in water instead of allowing them to escape.
Hydrosols are a safe and effective medicine. My hydrosols contain all the available volatile oils, unlike hydrosols where the oils are separated to make an essential oil. Some examples of herbs high in volatile oils are lavender, thyme, oregano, rosemary and roses.
First the plant matter goes into the belly of the Still. Then the top and then the cup and coil are attached. Then heat is put under the still (I use a propane camping stove). Essentially we are creating steam from the belly that then is cooled back to liquid in the cup/coil. Cold water is added to the cup to cool the coil. Then I draw off the hydrosol itself and then bottle it.
In this workshop you will learn how to choose the appropriate herbs, experience a plant-spirit journey with the herb we are using, preparing and completing a hydrosol, and you’ll take home a spray bottle.
