About: Mary Pat Palmer & The Philo School

Mary Pat Palmer, Registered Herbalist with the American Herbalist Guild, looked for the perfect location when she returned to Northern California and she found it. The Philo School of Herbal Energetics is located on sixteen enchanted acres of mixed farmland and redwood forest, between Highway 101 and Mendocino. Mary Pat Palmer offers apprenticeships and classes with local and nationally known herbalists as well as herbal medicine consults, herbal products and an emphasis on native and naturalized plants as well as drought consciousness.

Learn to know medicinal herbs from seed to harvest when you take the Heart of Herbology Apprenticeship. We start with the Speedling System to germinate seeds, then transplant to larger pots, then to the land; we use drip irrigation to water through the hot Anderson Valley summer; harvesting leaves, flowers and seeds until the winter when we dig the roots.  Along the way we make tinctures, salves, hydrosols and other products. We empower ourselves through our relationship with the energy of the plants.

We are also a United Plant Saver’s Botanical Sanctuary.  Our herbal medicinal gardens have over 300 kinds of medicinal plants, all on Registered Organic land.  13 acres are undisturbed redwoods…. all of this just 16.3 miles in by road from the Pacific Ocean and only 2 1/2 hours north of San Francisco.

The School offers herbal medicine apprenticeships with Mary Pat Palmer, MA, Registered Herbalist as well as other classes with nationally and internationally known herbalists. For a copy of Mary Pat’s resume please send an email.

IMG_0660 - Version 2Acquiring a Copper Alembic Still was an exciting venture and continues to be a joy to use. Hydrosols are a safe and wonderful way to use our herbal medicines. We still make tinctures, and alcohol is a better menstruum for many herbs, but the hydrosols are the favorites.

Lodging: We do not offer lodging. Please go to the Anderson Valley Chamber of Commerce page for available lodging: while you’re at it, check out lodging on the coast too.
