Winter
It’s Winter now! I’ve got Remay on my more delicate plants. Although it’s December, the Red Clover is in bloom and of course Calendula. Much of the garden is “sleeping over” but the stalks and seedheads are home to many poillinators as well as a perching place for birds. I won’t be tidying up until Spring let’s the pollinators find what they need.
Garlic, onions, leafy green vegetables and herbal roots can all be planted now here. The mornings are chilly but I still haven’t seen a serious freeze. We have had a 7.0 earthquake top the north and I’m rereading Cascadia’s Fault which is about the meeting of the San Andreas, the Cascadian and the Juan de Fuca at Cape Mendocino. Great reading.
Nothing major happened from the Quake. It was a rolling quake so there were S Waves rather than the jackhammer effect of the P Waves. No tsunami and apparently no major damage close to the offshore quake. I am fascinated by the geology of our Pacific Ocean.
How does it affect our plants? The tops of trees sway even if we don’t feel anything on the ground. Cats scurry and dogs howl. The tremors that we don’t feel still run through the roots and the mycelium underground. I don’t know the answer but will surely be seeking to find out!
